Herbal Remedy May End Peanut Allergies

Fortunes may improve soon for the 1.5 million-plus Americans who have peanut allergies, as research has shown that a Chinese herbal remedy based on a 2,000-year-old formula is effective in helping control this all-too-common and dangerous problem.

If the research continues along its promising path, this would be excellent news since peanut allergies are among the most serious food allergies and the problem is escalating in children, for reasons not yet understood. In a recent five-year period, the number of children with peanut allergies doubled.

“The quality of life is really poor for affected children and their families,” says Xiu-Min Li, MD, director of the Center for Chinese Herbal Therapy for Allergy and Asthma at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. For instance, “children with peanut allergies can’t go to parties and enjoy food, while their parents live in fear given the severity of Xiu-Min Li, MD, director of the Center for Chinese Herbal Therapy for Allergy and Asthma at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.”

AN ANCIENT FORMULA BRINGS HOPE

Dr. Li and her colleagues at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York conducted a mouse study and have now completed the first phase of a human study testing the effectiveness of the Chinese herbal remedy Food Allergy Herbal Formula-2 (FAHF-2) in controlling peanut allergy. The formula combines nine herbs which have a synergistic effect. A separate study testing the herbs individually showed only “partial efficacy.”

The mouse study tested FAHF-2 on mice allergic to peanuts, who were given FAHF-2 daily for seven weeks, then were subject to seven oral peanut “challenges” over the following 36 weeks. All the control group mice developed anaphylaxis, while none of the mice in the treated group did. Early findings of the human trial show that FAHF-2 is safe and well-tolerated. Patients take the formula in pill form twice a day and are evaluated every two months. “We’re starting to see a good immune response,” says Dr. Li. “We will finish the safety trial and begin the efficacy trial soon.”
